With the flags and the hedge, it looks like a steeplechase jump. It makes me wonder what is really going on here. I can just imagine some crazy 1929 stunt with a car running a whole course.

According to Wiki, the M2 in the top photo had a top speed of 36 mph, so it probably didn’t have much trouble getting air, though I doubt it flew very far. Would have liked to have seen it land on the car. The M3 was 10 mph slower and weighed a hell of a lot more. That’s some feat getting it that far off the ground . I wonder if they broke it.

I know that the m3 photo is from the Aberdeen proving grounds but a cursory Google search isn’t really turning up much on the tests.

Igor Sikorsky did all of his own test flights, and he made every one of them wearing his trademark suit and fedora. Of course, that was also back in the day when men wore a suit and tie every day.
